The movie is fun fiction, BUT it IS based on FACT =in 1967 the UK government DID pass a law called the MARINE OFFENCES ACT which made it illegal for anyone to have anything to do with the offshore music radio stations... what you may know as "PIRATE RADIO STATIONS" ... and this made it mroe and more difficult for these stations to survive at sea.

LADIES & GENTLEMEN - I am a DJ on the legendery RADIO CAROLINE - the most famous of the "PIRATE RADIO STATIONS"... and the one on which the movie PIRATE RADIO is based!
we are still broadcasting TODAY afgter 45 years - still legal... but now on cable/satelite as well as some fm feeds around the world.

DID YOU KNOW...
the word "PIRATE RADIO" comes from the OFFSHORE MUSIC RADIO STATIONS that broadcast from SHIPS.

these ship were never ILLEGALLY BROADCSTING - they broadcast from SHIPS located in international waters.

The only reason to broadcast from a SHIP was to be LEGAL.
they did NOT condone ILLEGAL BROADCASTING, but found a legal way to protest against government control, and this is VERY DIFFERENT from people setting up illegal broadcasts from their homes on land!

Yes it is good to have free speech and free music on the radio - but please do not confuse the PIRATE RADIO of today with he ORIGINAL pirate radio stations where DJs spend weeks and months on a cramped boat - sometimes without food and water - and in cold weather conditions at sea - in order the bring the music that they believed in to the people

Radio Caroline continued to broadcast from a SHIP AT SEA until the early 1990s when cable and satelite broadcasting meant that there were legal ONnshore options, although Radio Caroline does still have the ROSS REVENGE RADIO SHIP and we do some broadcasts from the ship.

Radio Caroline is still independant = not governed by huge broadcasting corporations = and continues with the message of loving awareness and good music.

For more information about the legendery radio caroline have a look at the website

I saw your movie at STIFF and I loved it so much I bought a couple of copies. I live in Fremont and I'd love to get involved with your station if you are still up and running. E-mail me.
